AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

I have worked in the film and television industry since 1988 and have been working as a film and TV editor in Los Angeles since 1997. From 2005 to 2017, I was employed full-time in Post-Production at Nickelodeon Animation Studio and worked on all of their hit shows, including: SpongeBob SquarePants, Fairly OddParents, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and all the rest. I now work as a freelance editor and writer. I occupy the rest of my time working on art, film, and music projects.

I was born and raised in Palo Alto, CA. and attended Foothill College in neighboring Los Altos Hills where I studied business and television/film production. I volunteered for years at nearby De Anza College Media Center in Cupertino in the mid-1980s and cut my teeth there writing, producing, and directing content for the city’s cable TV station.

My love for film began at the young age of 8, when I inherited my grandfather’s Super-8 film camera and began shooting short comedy films with my friends. Screenings of these films were extremely popular with many of the kids in my neighborhood. I also wrote and drew comics for my schoolmates throughout grade school and Jr. high.

I was hugely influenced by my grandfather, Chapin Kinyon, who performed in vaudeville in Minnesota as a child and also drew comics at a young age. Another inspiration was my great-uncle Dan Glass, a famous animator who worked for Fleischer Studios in NYC, working on Bimbo, Koko the Clown, Popeye, and Betty Boop films.

Shortly after high school, my comic book “Schoolbus Dave” was carried in local comic book shops, along with an accompanying cassette tape of 6 original songs I had written and produced.

In 1989, a friend and I discovered the band Switchblade Symphony and I quickly produced their first studio recording for a compilation album on my own label. The LP featured 10 of the best industrial/goth bands based in San Francisco at the time. The song “Mine Eyes” was key to Switchblade Symphony being signed to Cleopatra Records.

Under the moniker EYE-CON ENHANCEMENTS, I conducted video projection/lightshows in nightclubs and at several famous events in San Francisco, including the earliest raves held on the west coast: ToonTown, A-Rave-Called-Sharon and Groove Asylum. During the summer of 1992, I partnered with a friend and we held rave events of own called VORTEX, showcasing DJs such as Jeno, Josh, Garth, James, Pera, Tony and Noel.

In 1994, my entrepreneurial spirit took full hold of me and I launched a “hip and cool” condom brand named Hot Rod Condoms®. This endeavor took me on several trips around the world. My sole proprietorship sponsored many causes, organizations, and events in the U.S., including: AIM Healthcare Foundation, Playboy Nightcalls, Spice TV, Laguna Seca Raceway, Texas Rollerderby League, various film festivals, car shows, nightclubs and concerts (such as Hootenanny & Viva Las Vegas).

I have produced and directed many short films and web videos over the years (some gaining 100,000-500,000 views each). I was a regular contributor of content to the Backseat Film Festival which holds events in several major cities across the country each year.

My film God Squad! premiered at the Academy Award accredited LA International Short Film Festival in 2002 and went on to screen at many other festivals around the U.S. It was honored as Best Comedy at the North Hollywood Film Festival in 2003 and tallied more than 1 million views on Undergroundfilm.com between 2003-2005.

In 2007, I wrote and produced a full length CD of parody songs entitled “Are You Homeless” by “The Jimi Homeless Experience”. It features over-the-top parodies of Jimi Hendrix’ biggest hit songs performed by a fictional character named “Jimi Homeless”. Renowned Hendrix historian Ken Voss gave the material a rave review in his world-famous “Voodoo Child” fanzine.

Between 2007-2009, I assembled and managed The Jimi Homeless Experience band – booking and promoting a live stage show in and around Hollywood. During this time I tried my hand at stop-motion clay animation, producing two shorts featuring a clay version of the Jimi Homeless character.

I have been heading up a private investigation into my dad’s cold case from 1972. In 2010 our family gained access to case files holding evidence long kept secret from us and this jump-started our earlier investigative efforts started in the 1980s (conducted by me and my sister). With the help of hired guns and volunteers we have been slowly unraveling the mystery surrounding my dad’s murder.

MY CRAZY EARLY AMERICAN FAMILY HISTORY

When my grandfather passed away in 2005 I inherited his massive stamp collection and was surprised to find a complete family tree, genealogy charts and related notes buried at the bottom of one of the boxes. I was amazed to find out how rich this history is and very confused as to why my grandfather never mentioned any of it to me. Over the past several years I’ve been researching and verifying the information I found. This research also got me interested in tracing my mother’s side of the family and I’ve discovered some interesting things there as well.

My direct ancestors in America were soldiers in the Revolutionary War, a member of the Boston Tea Party, famous politicians, educators and ministers…
